This is a very good novel that is set in two time lines in what could be a parallel world and as the scenes unfolds in each world the tension in the story builds making it hard to stop reading. I do feel that anyone who gets upset with novels about Jesus and a myth should leave this of there list, although it is easy to read and enjoy without losing any your own persona believes.I love stories set in the ancient world and Egypt is one of my favorites. Set in 5th centaury Egypt, Hypatia is a mathematician and philosopher at the Temple of Isis, where the most sacred, valuable texts and scrolls of the religion are stored. The temple is under siege by the Romans who now insist that Christianity is the only religion and everything else is blasphemy (what a change from just a few centauries ago) and she is charged with hiding the texts.
In the current timeline set in Alexandria, Egypt in 2006, Lex Thomasson, an American Rhodes Scholar is contacted by a mysterious Vatican team, “The Commission” who are trying to hide their dig and finds from the Egyptian Antiquities Commission. They need help because Hypatia left a series of clues about where the texts and scrolls were hidden and he helps them with the clues she left hoping to keep the texts safe and available to others for study. Lex follows the clues not realizing that he is working for an organization that wants those documents destroyed or hidden from the world (for reader who like to solve puzzles the Gematria Key is included). There are other ironies in the novel that I’ll leave the reader to discover on their own.
If you can read this novel with an open mind, please do so, however, if you are going to give a low review because the book offends you believes please skip it instead of low-balling the book so you don’t feel so guilty for reading it.

A fiction about Jesus possibly being a fiction? Avoiding the overly meta, this novel weaves together a story over two disparate time periods, connected by a treasure hunt that may lead to the connection between many ancient cults at the origins of Christianity. While the narrative follows along some attempts to have the Jesus story derivative of solar and mathematical parallels that have not faired well among academics, the tale bases itself on some well-known history and some of the best attempts by scholars to say where some (all?) of the stories of Jesus originated. Moreover, the novel integrates elements of action and drama that at times is on par with the best of Dan Brown novels. Perhaps the mathematical puzzels would not work as well cinematically, but there are probably few stories that can make numerological symbolism integal to plot and action.
There are some elements were the writers speaks more directly to the reader than to or about the characters, and that can perturb the fourth wall unnecessarily. However, the distraction it causes is small, and the unfolding of the story is interesting and worthy of being read. Now, it shouldn't be the case that you learn about how Jesus was really the amalgamation of sun gods from a novel, in the same way you shouldn't learn art history from The Da Vinci Code; there are more appropriate avenues for that (and unlike some other novels, major sources/influences are cited by Herbert.) But like the best stories, and with the liberties of fiction, there is an interesting way to express what it might be like to learn about how the Christ myth might have come to be.
Great book. It combines an historical novel with a modern geopolitical thriller. And it ratchets up the tensions as the novel progresses.
The events are set in the seldom talked about time when Christianity was on its ascendancy and supplanting the polytheistic religions. It was a violent time between the dying pagan sects and the Christian leaders who were growing more and more powerful as their religion quickly spread. While gaining thousands of fanatical followers.
Interwoven is a modern thriller following a history/language PhD student who has been hired to translate the writings on a clandestinely explored ruin to solve riddles to deactivate traps and open their way through the chambers hidden inside.
The treasures they find lead the discoverers on a frantic worldwide hunt for items and writings that could shake the entire Christian world to its very core.
The teams' powerful protagonists will do anything to prevent whatever the team finds, from ever being revealed to the world.
The characters are well developed and believable. The fast-paced story lines keep you on the edge of your seat. The settings are well drawn, and you find yourself trying to separate the good guys from the bad.
It's a breakneck race to the end with twists and surprises thrown at the main character as he proceeds.
All in all, this is a very satisfying novel in much the same way that that The Da Vinci Code did. I liked it a lot.
